Self Advocacy Skills

Area of Growth

Self-Advocacy

Readiness Skill

Ability to communicate your needs to college personnel.

More information

  • Colleges expect students to independently advocate for what they need. Do this early and often in your college career.
  • Parents/guardians are not typically involved in these connections or communications.
  • Be aware that colleges cannot speak to parents/guardians about student progress without written consent from the student in each college department.
  • Discuss expectations with parents/guardians and obtain consent if you want college personnel to be able to potentially communicate with parents/guardians.
  • Even if consent is provided, colleges will continue to direct communication to students.

How to Further Development

Research support services at your college and independently advocate for your needs on a consistent basis.
