Know how to access medical/mental health care and prescribed medications.
More Information
- Research/initiate off-campus medical services and mental health providers ahead of time as there may be wait lists.
- If you currently see a mental health professional, consider continuing these services as the transition to college can be significant and campus counseling centers are often not designed for chronic needs.
- If you cannot continue with your current provider, initiate off-campus services well before school begins as you may need to consult your insurance, and/or be on a wait list etc.
- Consider how you will obtain/store/take meds, especially if you use controlled substances; off-campus pharmacies are usually necessary to obtain many medications.
- Determine how you will access your prescribed medications.
- Be sure your medical provider is aware of any side effects you are experiencing.
- If you plan to start/stop/change medications, always discuss this with your medical provider to minimize any impact on your health or academic performance.
How to Further Development
- Acquire/transition medical services if you are moving away to college.
- Consult your medical insurance provider to determine coverage in your college area.
- Medicaid patients should consult that program to determine if any changes are necessary to continue coverage in their new college area.
- Research the location and services of the campus health center, counseling center, and local pharmacies.
